Meadowsweet has long been used for treating infectious diseases and their symptoms; modern medicine derived aspirin from this plant. Plantain has similar anti-infection applications. Elder with peppermint was traditionally used to promote sweating, one of the therapies for common cold. Echinacea is a relatively more recent addition to the European herbal tradition, brought from America, where it had been used by Native Americans for treating infections.
